Cleaning a "Spot Clean Only" Pet Bed

by FoxEcom on May 20, 2026
Cleaning a "Spot Clean Only" Pet Bed

You check the tag on your pet's bed. It says "spot clean only." No machine wash. No dryer. Just those three words that make you wonder — how am I supposed to actually clean this?

The good news is spot clean doesn't mean you can't clean it well. It just means you need a different approach.

What "Spot Clean Only" Actually Means

That tag isn't trying to make your life hard. It means the bed has something that wouldn't survive a washing machine. Maybe the foam filling clumps when wet. Maybe the fabric shrinks. Maybe the inner layers aren't sealed.

Ignoring the tag and tossing it in the wash anyway can ruin the bed. Clumped filling. Torn seams. Mildew trapped inside where you can't see it.

Spot clean only is a warning, not a suggestion.

The Right Way to Spot Clean a Bed

Start by vacuuming the entire bed thoroughly. Use a brush attachment to get into seams and corners. Remove as much fur and dust as possible before any liquid touches the fabric.

Mix warm water with a few drops of mild detergent. Dip a white cloth or soft sponge into the mixture. Wring it out well — damp, not wet. Blot the stained area gently. Don't scrub. Scrubbing pushes the stain deeper into the foam.

Let the damp area sit for a few minutes. Then blot again with a dry towel to pull out moisture and dirt. Repeat until the stain fades.

For odors, sprinkle baking soda over the whole bed. Let it sit for 30 minutes. Vacuum it up.

Drying Is the Most Important Step

This is where most people go wrong.

After spot cleaning, the bed will be damp. If you put it back on the floor wet, moisture gets trapped inside. That leads to mold, mildew, and a bed that smells worse than before.

Place the bed in a well-ventilated area. If the sun isn't too strong, sunlight helps kill bacteria. But avoid direct harsh sun — it can fade or weaken some fabrics.

Flip the bed over halfway through drying. Give it a full day if possible. When it feels dry to the touch, wait another few hours. Inside foam dries slower than the surface.

When to Replace Instead

Spot cleaning works for regular maintenance. But eventually, every "spot clean only" bed reaches its limit.

If the bed smells no matter what you do, the foam has absorbed too much. If you see yellowing or staining that won't lift, the fabric is past saving. If the bed feels lumpy or flat, the filling has broken down.

At that point, no amount of spot cleaning will fix it. A fresh bed is the real solution.

For everyday use, consider beds with removable, machine-washable covers. They're easier to keep clean. But if you love a spot-clean-only bed, treat it gently, dry it thoroughly, and know when to let it go.
