What Length Leash Should You Use?

por MAX en Mar 29, 2026
Dog Leash

You pick up the leash. Your dog gets excited. You step out the door — and immediately, the leash feels either too short or too long.

The right length matters more than you think. It affects your control, your dog's freedom, and how relaxed you both feel on a walk.

Here’s a simple guide to three common lengths and when to use them.

Dog Leash

1.2m — City Control

Best for: Busy streets, crowded sidewalks, training

This is the shortest option. It keeps your dog close — within arm's reach at all times. When you're navigating crosswalks, passing other dogs, or walking through a crowd, this length gives you full control without having to yank or reel in the leash.

It’s also great for teaching loose-leash walking. With less slack, your dog learns to stay by your side more naturally.

Think of it as: The "close and safe" leash.

1.5m — Daily Companion

Best for: Neighborhood walks, parks, everyday routines

This is the Goldilocks length — not too short, not too long. Enough space for your dog to sniff ahead, wander a few steps to the side, and feel like they're on an adventure. But still short enough that you can easily bring them back when needed.

It works for most situations. A quiet street, a wide sidewalk, a walk around the block. It’s the leash you reach for without thinking.

Think of it as: The "just right" leash.

Dog Leash

1.8m — Trail Explorer

Best for: Open fields, beaches, hiking trails

This length gives your dog room to roam. They can explore further ahead, circle back, or pause to investigate a scent without you constantly stopping. It’s perfect for places where there’s space and fewer distractions.

Because there’s more slack, you’ll want to stay alert. But in open areas, that extra freedom is what makes the walk feel like an escape for both of you.

Think of it as: The "room to roam" leash.

Dog Leash

One More Thing

The right leash is the one that fits where you walk. If you mostly walk city streets, a shorter leash will feel right. If your weekends are for trails, you’ll appreciate the extra length.

The walk should feel good for both of you. The right length helps.
